The Egyptian national football team has intensified its preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, to be held in Morocco as the team looks to build momentum following a challenging performance in the previous edition of the tournament. Under head coach Hossam Hassan, the current build-up prioritizes physical readiness, tactical discipline, and mental resilience, as the team aims to compete for an eighth continental title.
The Egyptian national team entered the decisive phase of its preparation in early December, assembling for a centralized training camp in Cairo. Sessions focused on raising fitness levels and improving cohesion after a long club season for many international players. The technical staff concentrated on defensive organization, transitions, and structured attacking play, reflecting lessons drawn from recent tournament experiences.
As part of the final build-up, the Egyptian national team scheduled friendly matches against strong African opposition to simulate competitive conditions. These matches provided the coaching staff with an opportunity to assess squad depth, tactical flexibility, and match readiness before finalizing the list for the tournament in Morocco.
The emphasis on preparation comes after Egypt’s most recent AFCON appearance at the 2023 tournament, which was staged in Ivory Coast in January 2024. In that competition, the Egyptian national team exited in the round of 16, following a penalty shootout defeat after a series of draws in the group stage. The early elimination highlighted issues related to finishing efficiency, match control, and the physical demands of the tournament.
That outcome prompted reflection within the technical staff and the Egyptian Football Association, with officials stressing the need for greater balance and sharper execution in decisive moments. The current preparation program has therefore placed additional focus on game management, set-piece situations, and maintaining intensity across full matches.
The return and integration of senior players, led by captain Mohamed Salah, has been central to the team’s preparation. His leadership is seen as crucial in guiding younger players and reinforcing composure in high-pressure situations, particularly in knockout-stage scenarios.
Historically, the Egyptian national team remains the most successful side in Africa Cup of Nations history, with seven titles and the highest number of appearances in the competition. As AFCON 2025 approaches, the team enters the tournament aiming to apply lessons from its last campaign and turn structured preparation into consistent performance on the continental stage.
