Early Life and Introduction to Karate
Gianna Farouk was born in 1994, in
Alexandria, Egypt. From an early age, she showed strong discipline and a love
for sports. She started practicing karate at the age of six, where her natural
focus and determination quickly became evident. What started as a hobby soon
evolved into a serious athletic journey, supported by years of rigorous
training and personal sacrifice.
Professional Career
Gianna specialized in kata, a
discipline that emphasizes precision, balance, and mental control. She rose
steadily through national, African, and Arab championships, earning multiple
titles and recognition. On the international stage, she became a consistent
medalist at the World Karate Championships, Karate Premier League, and
continental competitions, placing Egypt firmly among the world’s karate elite.
Historic Olympic Achievement
The Karate Queen, as the World Karate Federation (WKF) often describes her, participated at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where karate was included for the first time. Competing against the world’s best athletes, she won the bronze medal in women’s kata, becoming Egypt’s first Olympic medalist in karate. This historic moment marked a breakthrough for the sport in Egypt and the Arab world.
Gianna also collected 17 gold medals
in her illustrious career, starting with the 2011 Junior World Championship and
the 2012 Youth Cup.
The year 2014 proved a turning point
for her as she clinched her first senior continental gold medal after winning
the African Championship in Senegal. In the same year, she made history by
winning gold at the World Championship in Germany when she was only 19.
From then on, winning has become a
habit for Farouk, a hijab-wearing athlete who was delighted when the WKF
allowed women to wear the Islamic headscarf in 2013.
She won five Karate Premier League
gold medals, a Junior World Championship gold medal in Indonesia and her second
Senior World Championship gold in 2016 Austria.
The last time she reached the top of
the podium was in April, 2016, when she won the silver medal of the Karate Premier League in Portugal.
The Egyptian Olympic Committee named
Farouk as the best female Egyptian athlete of 2020.
