When we
think of sports in Egypt, classics like soccer, basketball, or tennis often
come to mind. But what about padel, bike polo, or speed ball? Across the globe,
athletes are redefining the boundaries of competition with innovative and
unexpected games. These unique sports not only challenge traditional notions of
athleticism but also offer a fascinating glimpse into the creativity and
diversity of human culture. Let’s explore some of the most unconventional
sports that you probably didn’t know existed.
Sports have
always been a universal language, connecting people across cultures and
continents. While familiar sports like soccer, volleyball, tennis is what will
always come to our minds when someone mentions the word sports, specially here
in Egypt, there has been other sports that not many know of that seem to be
more interesting and exciting as the ones everybody know about. An example of
those sports is padel, bike polo, speed ball that not many people know that
they exist in Egypt. As much as those sports may not have the publicity they
should be having as much as people who play them always stand out in them and
aways have great feedback toward choosing to play one of those sports, plus the
feeling of playing a sport that doesn’t have much exposure to the usual sports
we mentioned. These
exceptional sports not only challenge traditional notions of athleticism but
also showcase the creativity and cultural diversity of human innovation,
offering new ways to engage with physical activity and competition.
Starting off
with the one unique game that has spread the most in Egypt across not just
adolescence but also gown-ups. Padel, a fast-growing sport that blends elements
of tennis and squash, is capturing the attention of players worldwide. With its
smaller court, enclosed walls, and doubles-only format, padel offers a dynamic
and accessible experience that appeals to beginners and seasoned athletes
alike. What started in Mexico has now evolved into a global phenomenon, making
its way onto courts from Europe to the Middle East. To many people’s surprise
padel only started in Egypt in 2017, and started to expand only 2 years ago,
also mentioning that it’s played on more a friendly basis. When talking more
professionally the Egyptian Padel Federation (founded in December 2018 under
the authority of Ashraf Sobhy, Minister of Youth and Sports), has as its mission to facilitate the
development of Egyptian padel players to improve their physical, tactical and
mental levels and trying to reach the top positions of the FIP ranking within
the next five to seven years.
In Egypt,
bike polo is an emerging sport that combines the thrill of polo with the
adrenaline of cycling. Although it’s relatively new to the local sports scene,
its unique blend of teamwork, strategy, and skill is quickly gaining traction
among urban communities. Played on city streets, parks, bike polo is not only
offering a fresh way to engage with sports but is also fostering a sense of teamwork
among Egypt's youth. Unlike padel, this on of a kind sport not many people know
of yet is one of the most engaging sports that are here in Egypt at the time.
It encourages working together as a team as it is divided into 2 teams of 3 on
a small court, so if the team doesn’t work together, it is a
lost match. One of the viral teams here in Egypt in “Cairo bike polo” which they spend over 6 months training to rech an
exceptional performance in any match, which hopes on day to be a part on the
Olympics.
Speedball, a dynamic blend of
soccer, basketball, and volleyball, offers an exciting twist on traditional
team sports. With its fast-paced action and emphasis on strategy, speedball
challenges players to think quickly while maintaining high levels of physical
endurance. As the sport continues to gain recognition, it’s drawing attention
for its unique ability to combine the best elements of multiple athletic
disciplines into one thrilling game. Playing with a ball that can be
kicked, thrown, or hit over a net requires players to constantly switch between
different skills and strategies, making it an excellent test of both agility
and teamwork. The game is typically played on a field or court, with two teams
competing to score points by either kicking or throwing the ball into the
opponent's goal. What sets speedball apart from other team sports is its
fluidity and constant movement, keeping players on their toes and spectators
engaged. With its rising popularity in schools and recreational leagues,
speedball has become a unique and inclusive sport that appeals to athletes of
all ages and abilities, promoting fitness, coordination, and cooperation.
