Hana Goda Exits World Cup After Pushing World No.1 to the Limit

A historic upset was within reach, but Hana Goda fell 4–3 to world No.1 Sun Yingsha, exiting the ITTF World Cup Macau 2026.

The seven-game thriller, one of the most dramatic matches of the tournament, saw Goda push the top-ranked Chinese star to the brink before falling in the decisive game. Despite the loss, the match underscored her growing status among the world’s elite.

Goda, who previously made history as an ITTF World Youth Champion for Egypt, showed no signs of intimidation from the outset. She matched Sun’s intensity with fearless attacking play, precise placement, and intelligent variation, forcing multiple momentum swings throughout the contest.

As the match unfolded, Goda’s confidence became increasingly evident. She broke through Sun’s defenses repeatedly, extending rallies and dictating play at key moments, ultimately forcing a rare deciding game against one of the sport’s most dominant figures.

Her overall performance reflects both her technical development and mental resilience, reinforcing her reputation as one of the brightest young talents in global table tennis and a symbol of Egypt’s rising presence in the sport.

The ITTF World Cup Macau 2026, featuring only the highest-ranked players worldwide, provided a demanding stage one on which Goda proved she belongs.

While her campaign ended in defeat, pushing Sun Yingsha to the limit marks a defining moment in her career, highlighting her transition from youth world champion to a serious contender at the senior international level.
